MD 110 Office Administration

This course introduces the skills and knowledge required for effective office administration. Students will learn the fundamentals of reception duties, including professional communication and customer service techniques. The course covers the operation and maintenance of common office equipment, collections, financial management, and math skills as they relate to medical assistant duties. Emphasis is also placed on telephone etiquette and ways to document patient information.

An introduction to the structure and function of the human body utilizing a system approach. Emphasis placed on the disease processes affecting the human body and treatment of disease.

MD 113 Clinical Aspects of Coding & Billing

This course overviews of Medicaid, Medicare, private insurance, and managed care verification and benefits are presented. Pre-authorization, referral procedures, and medical record documentation will be practiced. This course includes an introduction to the basics of diagnostic and procedure coding and presents students with the characteristics and conventions of International Classification of Disease (ICD)-9-CM, ICD-10-Clinical Modification (CM), Current Procedural Terminology (CPT)-4, and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) coding.

MD 114 Clinical Procedures

Demonstrations are provided for assisting the physician in performing physical examinations. Emphasis is placed on obtaining the medical history, measuring vital signs, EKG, medication administration, obtaining specimens. Patient charting and documentation using Electronic Health Records (EHR) is also practiced. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be covered in this course.

MD 123 Clinical Procedures II

In this course techniques are taught to enable students to perform the laboratory procedures conducted in physicians’ offices. Information regarding laboratory measurements, use of laboratory equipment, collection and processing of specimens, microbiology, phlebotomy, and blood testing is presented. Students are taught about Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulations and what types of tests can be conducted in a CLIA-waived lab. Students are also taught about and practice setup and assisting techniques for various surgical procedures.
