Students will study federal, state, and private health insurance plans including managed care systems. Students will learn the processing cycle of health insurance claims, health insurance terminology, reimbursement methodologies for professional services, and proper completion of the 1500 billing form. Students will learn math concepts associated with coinsurance, deductibles, allowables, and RVUs.

Emphasis is placed on developing a working knowledge of concepts, processes, and procedures in the billing cycle from point of service to receipt of payment. The course covers how to recognize components of a compliance plan for physician office billing, filing of appeals and focuses on decision making and critical thinking activities. Students will learn the importance of customer service in the medical industry. Effective verbal communication and telephone skills are taught. Problem resolution skills and how to handle difficult situations are important elements of this course. Students use Medisoft Practice Management to complete real-world scenarios.
